For the third time,
HOBAS pipes have been utilized on a Corpus Christi rehabilitation
project. This job, the Greenwood Drive Trunk Sanitary Sewer
Sliplining, originally included 12,000 ft. of 42", 48"
and 54" liner to be installed into existing 48",
54" and 60" RCP sewers. HOBAS pipes were specified along
with polyethylene (both profile wall and solid wall) and
cured-in-place pipe. City engineers cited HOBAS benefits as
including: higher retention of properties when subjected to high
heat generated by annular space grouting operations, the ability
to maintain sewage flow during the rehabilitation process,
superior hydraulics and the ability to meet diameter restrictions
(minimal I.D. reduction). Design considerations included tight
radius curves including a 300 ft. long reverse curve which existed
in the deteriorated concrete line. The City of Corpus Christi
Engineering Department was so pleased with the performance of the
HOBAS pipes, they extended the project an additional 2,000 ft.
Ease of Installation
The general contractor, Jalco, Inc. of Houston, stated that the
sliplining installation of HOBAS pipes was so easy that it was
"incidental" to cleaning and other work. The contractor
cited reasons for choosing HOBAS pipes as high strength,
dependability and excellent delivery service. Jalco field
personnel stated that the loads required to insert the HOBAS pipes
never exceeded 100 tons, even in the longest 2,500 ft. drive. The
typical drives of about 1,300 ft only required loads consistently
near 20 tons, and were normally completed in a couple of days
using the standard 20 ft. HOBAS sections with the gasket-sealed,
low profile bell-spigot joint. Due to the short radius curves
present in the existing lines, HOBAS provided some of the footage
in 10 ft. and 5 ft. lengths in order to maintain seal continuity.
HOBAS Preferred
Jalco was one of the first contractors to install HOBAS pipes in
several Texas cities including a direct bury job. Alief Diversion
Sewer (1986), in Bellaire, where over 11,000 ft. of 24 inch to 60
inch pipe was installed and the first slipline job in Corpus
Christi where 36 inch pipe was installed on over 700 ft. of an
interceptor rehabilitation. A representative from Jalco stated
that HOBAS is their first choice for rehabilitation jobs. Jalco,
Inc. has recently been awarded a job in Houston, TX, which is
comprised of over 15,000 ft. of 54" to rehabilitate a
60" sanitary sewer line. Jalco has again purchased HOBAS
pipes.
